SBSA Annual Conference – Welly Good Time was Had by All
Monday 2nd February 2009
The SBSA Annual Conference was held at Brymore School in Somerset in mid-January – perfect for wellington boots all round and delayed helicopters delivering Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal to give a brief address, tour the school and open the brand new boarding and classroom accommodation.
Brymore certainly had a buzz: government money put to excellent use in bringing the school’s boarding provision, as Headmaster and SBSA Chairman Malcolm Lloyd put it, ‘Straight from the nineteenth into the twenty first century.’
Visitors and delegates were fascinated by the range of farming and animal husbandry activities in which the boys were involved, from weighing sheep to working a real forge. The health and safety issues in most schools paled to insignificance.
All Black rugby legend Sean Fitzpatrick gave the after dinner speech, ending with a real live haka – almost as scary when one person does it as when performed by a whole team.
