£15 Million Government Support For Boarding
Wednesday 18th June 2008
The Government has made £15 million available over the next three years to support state boarding schools.
State boarding schools and schools of music and dance may make bids up until December 2008 for funding to support their efforts to meet regulatory requirements for boarding, to supply more boarding places for vulnerable children and to extend boarding in response to demand.
The SBSA welcomes such tangible evidence of the government’s support for boarding. Extra funding in 2005-6 established the importance of state boarding schools, and this continuing support reinforces the government’s commitment to improving and extending the number of places available for boarders in state schools.
Extending existing schools’ provision is particularly welcome as the government explores the possibility of including boarding places in some of the new academies coming on stream in the near future.
Funding will be spread over three years, and several schools have already made bids at each of the first two closing dates, at the end of March and the end of June. Backing for bids from Ashby, Dallam and St George’s VA School were approved in June.
The next two closing dates are 30 September and 31 December 2008.
